The contractor hired to clean-up the kerosene spill in a New River tributary will continue working through the weekend and into next week.

Boone Fire chief Jimmy Isaacs wants to remind residents there is still raw fuel in areas of the waterway and no one should be in or around the affected creek until clean-up is complete.

The fuel spill originated at Mountain Oil on East King Street due to an accident while filling tanks Wednesday morning. The affected waterway runs along East King Street, under the roadway and through the Perkinsville community to the South Fork of the New River. The waterway has been called both Hardin Creek and Boone Creek, but it is not identified on Boone flood maps.

Efforts of the Boone Fire Department prevented the kerosene from entering the New River.

S.T.A.T. Inc, an industrial environment service, was hired Wednesday by Mountain Oil to clean up the kerosene in the creek and along the banks of the creek. Boone Fire has turned the site over to S.T.A.T. and is no longer working on the spill.
