Appalachian State's volleyball team came out on fire and took a 3-1 victory over SoCon South Division foe College of Charleston Saturday afternoon.
It was the Mountaineers' first win over the Cougars since Oct. 27, 2007 when the Mountaineers won by the same margin. With the victory, the Mountaineers snap a two-match losing streak and also raised 3500 dollars for the fight against breast cancer in their Dig Pink event.
Appalachian (10-15, 6-5) came out strong in first set action and never looked back, as the Mountaineers cruised to a 25-17 first set victory. College of Charleston won the second game 25-18, but Appalachian State took the third game 25-20 and the fourth 25-17.
Offensively, sophomore Maggie Seeds tied a career and match-high with 16 kills, while Lauren Swecker posted a season-best 13 kills. Seeds also tallied a career-best two block solos on the afternoon.
Men's soccer
Appalachian State University men's soccer student-athlete Sean Dreybus was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.
A sophomore fron Newport News, Va., Dreybus earned second-team honors for the first time in his career.
Dreybus is tied for third on the team in goals this season with three and has six points.
• BOILING SPRINGS - Sean Dreybus scored two goals to lead Appalachian State University men's soccer to a 4-2 win Saturday night at Gardner-Webb.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first 10 minutes, Appalachian (6-8-1) reeled off four-straight goals to gain control of the match in sloppy field conditions.
Women's soccer
CULLOWHEE - Appalachian State was unable to get on the board Friday night, falling in the season finale 1-0 at Western Carolina.
Erin Hamilton put Western (8-6-5, 5-3-3 SoCon) on the board in the 42nd minute off a cross pass from Kayla Beauduy.  The goal was Hamilton's first of the season.
Western held a 14-13 edge in shots and both teams had several scoring opportunities.
In the seventh minute ASU's Paige Morrow got a shot on goal but Western keeper Caitlin Williams was able to make the stop.  Four minutes later Western's Katie Kole got a shot on goal but Emma White made the stop for ASU (6-9-4, 3-5-3).
Field hockey
Longwood's Andrea Bastiaanse broke a 1-1 tie 23 seconds into the second overtime, spoiling Senior Day ceremonies at Kidd Brewer Stadium Sunday and lifting the Lancers to a crucial NorPac win over Appalachian State.
Bastiaanse.s goal ended what was easily the most entertaining contest of the 2009 season. Sunday's game was marked by physical play by both teams, spectacular work in goal.
