Furman asked to wear its white jerseys for its home game with the Mountaineers this Saturday in conjunction with a "White Out" promotion of having everybody at Paladins Stadium wearing white. So, the Mountaineers will wear their gold jerseys for their game Saturday. Not surprisingly, the No. 14 worn by quarterback Armanti Edwards fetched the highest bid of $1,200. Edwards said he wasn't necessarily surprised at the high bid, especially since his 1989 throwback jersey worn last year went for $1,400. "It would have (surprised him) a couple of years ago, but not right now," he said. "I didn't even look (at the bids). I just found out right now." Edwards said he was flattered that somebody would pay that much money for his jersey. "It show how much fans appreciate us at Appalachian," he said. Thumb update Edwards said his thumb felt "pretty good" after he jammed it against Georgia Southern last Saturday. Edwards was using a stiff arm on a play and jammed it on a defender's helmet. He had an icepack on his thumb when he met with reporters following the game. "It's pretty good," he said. "I got it jammed during the game." Have team, will travel Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore stated that it really didn't make any difference where the Mountaineers played as long as they played well in the process. A reporter asked him Paladins Stadium is a difficult place to play. "It's one of those places you have to go play," Moore said. "I'm probably the wrong guy to ask a question about that. I've never overly been concerned about where we play as much as how we're playing. That's the biggest difference." Kidd Brewer Stadium, home of the Mountaineers, has developed a reputation for being a tough place to play. The Mountaineers have the highest average attendance in the SoCon and are 48-3 in their last 51 games at "The Rock." Moore said playing in huge venues such as Michigan Stadium (109,000) and LSU (92,000) have made playing in smaller venues not so intimidating. Furman's stadium has a capacity of 16,000. "Obviously we enjoy playing in places such as Michigan and at LSU twice and we'll play at Florida next year," Moore said. "I'm a lot more concerned about how we play when we get there." ASU dominates series Appalachian State trails the overall series 21-15-3, but the Mountaineers have won seven out of the last eight games with the Paladins. The most famous ASU win was the 16-15 victory at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Known as the Miracle on the Mountain, defensive end Josh Jeffries intercepted a Billy Napier pass on a two-point conversion attempt, lateralled the ball to Derek Black, who raced for a defensive two-point conversion and the win. Other ASU wins include a 29-23 victory in the 2005 playoffs, an 18-17 victory in 2000, a 30-29 shootout in 2004 and a 34-27 victory in 2007 that saw Corey Lynch intercept a pass to stop a late Paladins rally. However, the Mountaineers have not beaten Furman in Greenville two times in a row. Appalachian State won in 2007, but lost 34-31 in 2005, 28-22 in 2001 and 35-21 in 1999. Appalachian State beat the Paladins 26-14 last year in Boone. ASU dominates SoCon The Mountaineers are looking to win their 17th straight SoCon game. It would be the longest league-winning streak since West Virginia won 30 straight from 1952-59. Polls update Appalachian State jumped to No. 7 in The Sports Network poll, up from No. 8 the previous week. The Mountaineers are up to No. 8 in the coaches' poll, up from No. 9. They trail Elon by one spot in each poll. ASU's band to play at Furman Appalachian State's marching band will perform at halftime of the Mountaineers' game at Furman Saturday. Saturday marks the first time this season that "North Carolina's Band of Distinction" will perform at an ASU road contest. Following the game, the Marching Mountaineers will make the short trip to Atlanta, where they'll perform in the Bands of America Super Regional at the Georgia Dome at 10:30 p.m. Copyright © 2010, The Watauga Democrat |
