Steve Virginia show
Steve Virginia, a Country Rock artist from Nashville, Tenn., formerly of Boone, will perform on Saturday, March 20, at the Harvest House Performing Arts Center, next to the Boone Bowling Alley. Tickets will be $5. and will go on pre-sale before the show.


Bingo
Mabel and Bethel middle school students will host an evening of Bingo at the Mabel School cafeteria on Saturday, March 20, from 5 p.m.-? The event will help raise funds for Spring educational field trips (8th grade end of year trip/Space Camp, etc.). Play all night for $10 per Bingo card. There will be food and prizes.


Rook tournament
New River Fire Department will be having a Rook tournament on Saturday, March 20th at 7 p.m. Food will be served starting at 6:00.


Blue Ridge Fiber Guild
The Blue Ridge Fiber Guild is offering a felting workshop from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the Western Community Center, 1080 Old US Hwy. 421N, Sugar Grove, N.C. Jane Campbell will help participants make felted flowers as well as felt-covered soaps. Everyone invited. For more information call 297-6900.


Coffee House Talent Night
Coffee House Talent Night will be held Saturday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hensley Hall in the West Jefferson Methodist Church. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door. For more information, call 336-846-ARTS or http://www.ashecountyarts.org .


Seminar  on 'How to Grow When It's Slow...'
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and its Business Support Committee are offering the seminar "How to Grow When It's Slow: Social Media for Your Business." The seminar will be held at the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue Station meeting room. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for coffee and a complementary continental breakfast. The program will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The event is free to all Blowing Rock chamber members. Nonmembers may attend for $20. Tweetsie Railroad hosts annual Job Fair
Tweetsie Railroad will host its annual Job Fair on Saturday, March 20, from 10  a.m. to 3  p.m. inside the Palace Saloon at Tweetsie. A diverse range of job opportunities are available. Tweetsie traditionally hires more than  200 seasonal employees each operating season. Cloth Diapers 101
Curious about using cloth diapers for your baby or toddler? Meet at Green Mother Goods in downtown Boone on Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. for a short informative session about cloth diapers. Learn the benefits of cloth, as well as how to store and care for cloth diapers. See firsthand the modern options available (no more pins). Door prizes will be given away.


Country Breakfast at the Post
The Watauga American Legion Post 130, located at 135 Bear Trail, Boone, will have a "Country Breakfast at the Post" on Saturday, March 20,  from 7 to 10 a.m. The cost is $7 per person for "all you can eat." For take out, call 264-2864 Saturday morning only.


4-H youth gardening workshop
A 4-H youth gardening workshop will be held Saturday, March 20. Participants will explore the wonders of plants and gardens. In the workshop, the group will start a Tickle-Me plant. Attendees and parents will also receive inspiration, resources and ideas for planting a garden at home.  The workshop is targeted for 5- to 12- year-olds and will be held at the Agricultural Conference Center in Boone from 10 to 11:30 a.m.  To register, or for more information, contact Watauga County 4-H at 828-264-3061.


Felting workshop
The Blue Ridge Fiber Guild is offering a felting workshop at its March meeting.  Jane Campbell will help participants make felted flowers, as well as felt-covered soaps.  Bring a bar of soap (rounded edges best) and some colorful, feltable wool, a tray, a dishpan, and gloves if desired. The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 20, at 9:30 a.m. at the Western Watauga Community Center, 1080 Old U.S. Hwy 421 N, Sugar Grove.  Everyone is invited.  For more information, call 828-297-6900.


Camp Broadstone spring open house
A Camp Broadstone open house will be held on March 20 from 1-4 p.m. This drop-in event featurings meeting the staff, touring the camp's facilities, sampling some of the camp's activities, entering drawings to win prizes, and having light refreshments. RSVP by March 18 by calling 828-963-4640, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.


Microchip clinic
A microchip clinic will be held Saturday, March 20, at the Animal Medical Cener of Boone, 1582 Old 421 South, from 11:30 a.m. until noon. Saturday microchip clinics are held once a month. The $25 microchip fee benefits the Watauga Humane Society.  Pet owners need to bring proof of current rabies vaccination. For additional information,  call the Watauga Humane Society at 264-7865.


4-H Youth Gardening Series
A 4-H Youth Gardening Series targeted for kids 5-12 years old will be held on Saturdays: March 20, "The Wonders of Plants"; April 24, "Viva La Veggies! Pumpkin Project and more"; and May 15, "Flower Power: Start Your Sunflowers." March and April will start off at the Agricultural Conference Center. Contact Watauga County 4-H at 264-3061 for more information and to register.


Mount Jefferson State Natural Area
On Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m., the program "Coffee with a Ranger" will be held at the Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in Ashe County. Meet at the park office. Participants will learn about the park and career information for those aspiring to be a park ranger. For more information, call (336) 846-1042.


New River State Park
On March 20 at 6:30 p.m., the program "Woodcock Watch" will be held at New River State Park in Ashe County. There will be a slide presentation at the visitor center at the U.S. 221 access, then a short drive to the viewing area. Wear warm clothing and shoes for a short level trail and bring a flashlight. All programs are open to the public and are free of charge. Contact the park office for information about programs, or for directions, at (336) 982-2587.


Hiking Club
The Chargers & Rechargers Hiking Club on Saturday, March 20, will hike Roan Mountain, Tenn., from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge - 6 miles, four hours. Rated moderate/strenuous.  Meet at the Carvers Gap parking area which is on the North Carolina/Tennessee line at the top of N.C. 261 (143 on the Tennessee side). Trail is rocky with three steep slopes to climb in each direction.  Hike is above 5,000 feet elevation, which will make weather a significant factor. No dogs allowed.
