Battle of the Books competitions Watauga County Schools' Battle of the Books competitions will be held in March and April. The Middle School Battle of the Books competition will be held Friday, March 19 (snow date March 26), at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone. Competition begins at 9 a.m. The Elementary Battle of the Books competition will be held Friday, April 16 (snow date April 19), beginning at 9 a.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Landscape Educational Days On Friday, March 19, there will be a landscape educational workshop sponsored by Avery and Watauga county Cooperative Extension centers, and by the Western North Carolina Horticulture Association. Cost is $12 per person, which includes lunch and informational handouts. Faith Fellowship and Harvest Ministries Faith Fellowship & Harvest Ministries will host a nonpartisan, two-day conference on the Constitution from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., March 19 and 20, at 513 E. Main St., Jefferson. All elected officials within thd congressional district have been personally invited to attend, and as many candidates as are registered by the closing of the filing date, will be invited to attend, a spokesperson for the church said. Officials from all political parties and the voting public are encouraged to attend also. Lifeguard certification Appalachian State University Recreation and the American Red Cross are now accepting registration for lifeguarding certification classes. The classes are open to all ASU students, faculty and staff, and community members who want to obtain certifications in the areas of lifeguarding, First aid and CRR/AED. Participants must be at least 15 years old and able to swim 300 yards. Registration is required. Classes begin March 19 and end March 28. Lifeguard challenge ASU Recreation and the American Red Cross are now accepting registration forms for this semester's lifeguard challenge. The challenge is open to ASU students, faculty and staff, as well as community members, who have a current lifeguard training certificate but want to learn the latest updates in the areas of lifeguarding, first aid and CRR/AED. Registration is required. The challenge will be held on Fridays, March 19 and 26, from 5-8 p.m. and on Sunday, March 28, from noon-3 p.m. Cost is: students, $55; faculty/staff, $65; and general public, $85.
