PUBLICNOTICE
NOTICEOF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED SEWAGE
Dueto manhole damage by an NCDOT contractor during work associated withthe Highway 321 widening project, the Town of Blowing Rockexperienced a sanitary sewer overflow which resulted in approximately58,500 gallons of untreated wastewater being released into the MiddleFork of the South Fork of the New River on June 12, 2013. The causeof the overflow was due to debris in the line which occurred when themanhole at which the overflow occurred had been damaged by thecontractor. This damage allowed debris to enter into the Town'ssanitary sewer system causing a blockage which resulted in theoverflow. The blockage has been removed and remedial actions havebeen taken. No fish kill has been reported in conjunction with thisoverflow.
NCGeneral Statute 143-215.1C(b) requires that municipalities, animaloperations, industries, and others who operate waste handling systemsissue public notices when a wastewater spill of 15,000 gallons ormore reaches surface waters.
