Younger named first WHS Athlete of the Week

Hannah Younger was named Watauga’s Athlete of the Week by members of the school’s athletic department.
Younger, who plays on Watauga’s girls’ soccer team, scored three goals in a victory over Avery in the Freedom Soccer Invitational tournament last week. The Pioneers beat Avery 5-3.
Younger signed a letter of intent to play at Queens College.
Watauga plays at Alexander Central tonight. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., while the varsity plays at 6:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL
CLEMMONS — West Forsyth beat visiting Watauga 10-0 in five innings Wednesday.
Taylor Drummonds provided Watauga with its final hit. The Pioneers had just four base runners in the game. Two runners reach base because of a walk, and another reached because of a West Forsyth error.
Watauga pitcher Michala McCune gave up four runs on four hits and walked four in three innings. Kim Robinson gave up six runs on five hits in one inning. She struck out two and walked one.
Watauga faces Northwestern Conference power Alexander Central at 4 p.m. tonight.

BOYS’ TENNIS
CHARLOTTE — Watauga’s boys’ tennis team lost 9-0 to powerful Providence Wednesday in a nonconference match.
Providence did not lose a set in the tournament. Watauga’s No. 2 seeded Landon Taylor fell 7-5, 6-1 to Nicholas Cotrill and No. 6 seeded Noah Moomaw fell to Ronald Vergal 6-3, 6-4.
Watauga (2-1) begins Northwestern Conference play at home today against Hickory.
Will Spinetto and Josh Lampkins both won exhibition matches for the Pioneers.
