Wofford outlasts Appalachian State

by Staff Reports

Appalachian State had a chance to bury Wofford after taking a halftime lead.

Instead, the Terriers took a lead in the second half and never gave it back in a 64-58 victory over the Mountaineers in front of 1,703 fans at the Holmes Center.

Appalachian State (8-17, 4-8 SoCon) led 36-31 at halftime after shooting 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the field. The Mountaineers got key contributions from Tevin Baskin (10 points) and Tab Hamilton (seven points) in the first 20 minutes. Hamilton hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the half to give the Mountaineers their five-point advantage.

But Wofford (15-10, 9-3 SoCon) rallied with a 7-0 run capped by a John Swinton that gave the Terriers a 42-40 lead with 11:52 left in the game.

Wofford would eventually take an eight point lead, but could not completely put the Mountaineers away. Appalachian State managed to stay close to the Terriers, but after tying the game for a 14th time at 44-44, the Mountaineers would never take the lead.

They pulled to 60-58 on a Hamilton layup with 1:08 left, but Wofford scored the next four points to close out the win.

Wofford, which won its eighth straight game, held Appalachian State to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half. It is also Wofford's fourth straight victory in Boone.

Baskin, who has been nursing a knee injury, finished with 13 points off the bench. Hamilton added 12 and Tommy Spagnolo scored 10.

Jay Canty, who is recovering from a broken hand, scored four points in his second game back since his injury. Canty made both of his shots, taken in the first half, and played 11 minutes. He also had two assists.

Skinner led all scorers with 17 points. Spencer Collins added 12 points and C.J. Neumann scored 11.

Appalachian State hosts Western Carolina at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Mountaineers lost to Western Carolina 84-75 in overtime during their game in Cullowhee on Feb. 8.
