Wilkes Central girls cruise past Watauga

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

MORAVIAN FALLS -- Watauga's girls' basketball team fell into a big hole and could not climb out in a 60-47 loss to Wilkes Central Tuesday night.

The Pioneers (0-1) took a 2-0 lead on a pair of Savanna Wood foul shots, but were outscored 12-3 the rest of the first quarter. Watauga went 0-for-9 from the field during that stretch, and failed to score on 12 straight possessions.

Watauga trailed 21-12 when Wilkes Central closed out the quarter with a 12-3 run to take a 33-15 lead into halftime.

Watauga coach Klay Anderson said before the season that he was looking for some leaders to replace Hannah Margolis, a four-year starter. He was happy with the effort of his players, but wants more leadership on the court.

"We've got to have a little more heart and we've got to have a little more heart early," Pioneers coach Klay Anderson said. "I'm looking for people who are going to step up and lead. I'm proud of my girls for the majority of the game, but we've got to stop looking around because Hannah Margolis isn't walking through that door."

Watauga got 19 points Savanna Wood, including three of the Pioneers' four 3-point baskets. Ryan Loflin scored eight points and four rebounds, while Clare Harris scored six points. Kaelin McNeill grabbed 13 rebounds and scored five for the Pioneers.

It wasn't enough to counter three Wilkes Central players who scored in double figures. Kailey McNeill led the Eagles with 15 points and Amber Godfrey scored 12. Laken Blackburn added 10 points.

Wilkes Central too its largest lead, 49-30, in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers rallied to close to within 50-38 after a 3-pointer by Wood and a foul shot by Loflin, but Godfrey made six straight foul shots to push the Eagles' lead back to 56-38 with 1:37 left in the game.

"Give Wilkes a lot of credit," Anderson said. "They were well prepared tonight and that's on me. We are going to be better by next Tuesday."

Watauga has a busy week coming up. The Pioneers host rival Avery on Dec. 3, and follows a day later with a game at Alexander Central. Watauga hosts Ashe on Dec. 6.
