Wichita State beats ASU 2-1

FT. MYERS, Fla. — Appalachian State’s softball team lost 2-1 in eight innings to Wichita State in the Mountaineers’ final game of the Florida Coast Gulf University Invitational.
Wichita State (3-6), which beat Appalachian State (1-4) 4-3 on Saturday, scored in the first inning when after hitting a double, Ali Vanderver scored on a sacrifice fly.
Appalachian State pitcher Alissa Schoelkopf settled in a struck out 11 batters in eight innings.
Schoelkopf allowed just four hits in the game.
Appalachian State scored its lone run in the seventh inning when Cynthia Gomez drilled an RBI single into left field. Pepper Butler, pinch-running for Meghan Smith, scored from second base.
But Wichita State, using the international tiebreaker rules for extra innings, started the eighth with Kaitlyn Carey on second base. Carey, after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, scored on a sacrifice fly.
Gomez started on second base for the Mountaineers and got to third on a sacrifice bunt from Whitney Johnson. Dani Heichen reached base on a throwing error and Alle Cashion was walked to load the bases.
But the Mountaineers could not take advantage and the Shockers held on to win.
Appalachian State finished with five hits. The Mountaineers play at USC Upstate on Feb. 26.
