CULLOWHEE -- Appalachian State women's soccer team fell to Western Carolina 1-0 Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers (8-5-5, 4-2-4) entered the game guaranteed a spot in the Southern Conference tournament with the only question being whether or not they would host a first round game. With the loss and many dominoes falling, App State will travel to Samford as the fifth seed in the tournament.
The Catamounts (10-8-1, 4-6-0) scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute to break a scoreless tie with just eight minutes to play. Kelly Pannell sent a pass to Sara Robinson at the top of the box who then had an open opportunity to score and took advantage.
Highlighting the night for the Mountaineers was sophomore goalkeeper Megan Roberson. A strong night in net for Roberson resulted in eight saves for the Mountaineers to keep them in the game.
Western Carolina led in shots 13-8 and corner kicks 8-5. The Mountaineers were credited with a team save when in a 1-0 game Nicole Steyl headed a ball away on the goal line to keep the game in striking distance.
