Western Carolina slips past App State women

Western Carolina's women's basketball team used a balanced offense, and the 11 3-point baskets it produced, to beat Appalachian State 71-63 in front of 247 fans at the Holmes Center Tuesday night.

Western Carolina made 11-of-24 3-point baskets, including four from Makensey Campbell. She came off the bench to lead the Catamounts in scoring with 18 points.

Justin Taylor added 15 points, while Lindsay Simpson and Rena Wakama both scored 14 points.

Appalachian State's Maryah Sydnor and KeKe Cooper did what they could to keep the Mountaineers close. Cooper came off the bench to score 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting. She also pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out four assists.

Sydnor added 20 points and led the Mountaineers with 11 rebounds.

Bria Huffman added eight points, but no other Mountaineer scored more than four. The other four starters, not including Sydnor, combined to score just 13 points and grabbed just four rebounds.

App State fell behind early, but rallied to take a 47-44 lead in the second half when Sydnor made a layup with 16:39 left. Western Carolina struck back with a 10-0 run to go back in front 54-47 and never trailed again.

Appalachian State shot 60.7 percent from the field in the first half, but still trailed 41-37 at halftime. The Mountaineers cooled considerably from the field by making 35.7 shots from the field in the second half.

Appalachian State plays its next three games on the road, stating on Dec. 4 at North Carolina A&T. They play in the Lady Griz Classic on Dec. 6-7 at the University of Montana in Missoula, Mont.
