Western Carolina holds off App State

by Staff Reports

Appalachian State never completely recovered from an early deficit and fell 74-61 to Western Carolina in front of 2,041 at the Holmes Center Thursday night.

The Mountaineers (8-18, 4-9 SoCon) never fell behind by 12, but never got closer than three points after falling behind 9-0. The Mountaineers did not help themselves by making just 16-of-33 from the foul line.

Appalachian State went 1-2 during its three-game homestand, which was the Mountaineers' final as members of the Southern Conference. App State moves to the Sun Belt Conference next season.

The Mountaineers play their final three games on the road starting Saturday at Furman.

App State closes out the season at Samford on Feb. 27 and at Chattanooga on March 1.

The Mountaineers trailed Western Carolina 39-36 on a three-point play by Jay Canty with 14:26 left in the game. Western Carolina (16-12, 9-4) rebuilt its lead, but App State closed to 48-45 with 10:43 left in the game on a layup by Aaron Scott.

That would be as close as the Mountaineers would get. Western Carolina never let them get any closer than four points the rest of the game.

Tommy Spagnolo led the Mountaineers in scoring with 18 points, and in rebounding with 11 boards. Spagnolo made all seven of his shots from the field, but just 4-of-10 from the foul line.

It's Spagnolo's sixth double-double of the season.

Ty Toney added 12 points and Tevin Baskin scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

James Sinclair scored 17 points to lead Western Carolina. The Catamounts clinched a first-round bye in the Southern Conference Tournament.
