Watauga's wrestling team falls to St. Stephens
by Staff Reports
Although Watauga scored some victories against St. Stephens, the Pioneers could not overcome the Indians' depth in a 46-29 match Friday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
Watauga picked up three victories by pinfall and a technical fall against the traditionally powerful Indians. Gabe Irwin, who wrestles at 160 pounds, picked up Watauga's first victory with a pin of Tucker Justice.
Jackson Carr, wrestling at 182 pounds, pinned Shyheim Huitt to grab Watauga's second victory. His victory pulled the Pioneers to within 18-12 of St. Stephens in the team competition.
St. Stephens went on to win the next three matches, all by pinfall, to take a 36-12 lead that Watauga, realistically, could not overcome. Watauga's 106-pound wrestler Alex Wetmore pinned Brayton Vetter, and Mark Townsend followed two matches later at 120-pound with a 22-7 technical fall over Austin Pickard.
Watauga's Demetre Kostis finished off the match at 132 pounds by pinning Angel Romero.
The Pioneers close out the regular season Tuesday at Fred T. Foard. The Pioneers will participate in the Northwestern Conference Tournament at Lentz-Eggers Gym on Saturday.
