Watauga's softball team loses to St. Stephens

HICKORY -- Watauga's softball team fell 8-4 to St. Stephens in the first round of the Northwestern Conference Softball Tournament Tuesday.
Watauga got a two-run triple from Michala McCune in the first inning, which gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long. St. Stephens scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 5-2 lead. Watauga scored two runs in the top of the third inning when Shelby Winebarger singled and scored on a McCune double to close the Indians' lead to 5-3.
McCune went 2-for-4 with two extra base hits and three RBIs. Winebarger went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
McCune took the loss on the mound for the Pioneers. She gave up eight runs, all earned, and scattered 12 hits. She struck out three batters and walked three.
Watauga must wait to see who it will play in the first round of the state 4-A playoffs. The game will be next week.
