Watauga's girls' tennis team blanks Mooresville
by Staff Reports
Watauga’s girls’ tennis team opened the 2012 season pretty much the same way Watauga teams have done in the past — with a dominant victory.
Watauga, under new coach Anna DeChellis, cruised past Mooresville 9-0 at Watauga’s fields Thursday. The Pioneers originally scheduled matches with Mount Tabor and Reagan earlier in the week, but both were cancelled.
Watauga’s singles players did not lose a set. No. 2 seeded Hannah Peterson, No. 3 seeded Nicole Fox and No. 5 seeded Emily Burwell won their matches 6-0, 6-0. No. 1 seed Meredith Smith beat Maggie Siebert 6-0, 6-1.
Kelsi Kanoy, a freshman, turned in a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, while Annika Davidson won her match 6-0, 6-4.
It was more of the same in doubles. Smith teamed with Fox to beat Siebert and Kaylee Beaudoin 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Peterson and Burwell won the No. 2 doubles match 8-0, and Kanoy teamed with Davidson to win the No. 3 match 8-6.
Savannah Copeland and Ali Maupin both won their exhibition matches by 6-1 scores.
Watauga plays at Mount Airy on Monday.
