Watauga's girls tennis beats East Wilkes 8-1
RONDA — Watauga’s girls’ tennis team took an 8-1 victory over East Wilkes in the first match the Pioneers have played in over a week.
The Pioneers (7-0) won five of their six singles matches. Meredith Smith won her match 6-0, 6-2 over Kelly Johnson at No. 1 singles, while Hannah Peterson beat ShaNisha White 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Kelsi Kannoy won her match over Christy Carter 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Nicole Fox needed three sets before beating Hannah Brown 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 at No. 3 singles. Emily Burwell beat Molly Callaway in three sets at No. 4 singles 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 10-5.
East Wilkes’ No. 6 player Marigail Mahaffey beat Watauga’s Annika Davidson 6-3, 6-2.
Watauga swept through the doubles competition. Smith and Fox teamed to beat White and Brown 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Petersen and Burwell beat Johnson and Mahaffey 8-5. Kanoy and Davidson beat Callaway and Carter 9-7.
Watauga plays at Northwestern Conference rival Alexander Central on Thursday.
