Watauga's girls' soccer team beats West Caldwell

MORGANTON -- With Watauga's 6-0 win over West Caldwell in the finals of the Freedom Invitational soccer tournament, the Pioneers' got a team effort when it came to goal scoring.
Six different players scored a goal in the victory, three in each half. The
Pioneers (3-0-1) won three games to win the tournament, having beaten Wilkes Central 3-0 on Tuesday
and McDowell 4-0.
Watauga has outscored its opponents 14-1 in its four games this season.
Tori Derrick, who had a hat trick against McDowell, scored the Pioneers' first goal with an assist from Sierra Hill. Derrick's goal in the 12th minute of the first half gave Watauga a 1-0 lead.
Heather Byrd put the Pioneers in front 2-0 at the 20-minute mark of the first half on a corner kick by Abi Carson, who assisted on the Pioneers' next goal. Mia Austin scored on another Carson corner kick in the 26th minute.
That goal gave the Pioneers a 3-0 halftime lead.
Carson got into the scoring column with Watauga's first goal of the second half when she scored on a penalty kick.
Derrick assisted Hill with her goal four minutes after Carson's goal to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead at the 53rd minute.
Kat Welsh closed out the Pioneers' scoring with a goal off an assist by Samara Critcher.
Watauga plays its first home match Tuesday against Forbush. The Pioneers also play at Avery on Friday.
Forbush goes into the match with a 2-0 record after beating Davie County 1-0 and R.J. Reynolds 3-1.
