Watauga's boys' tennis team trips Grimsley

Watauga's boys' tennis team picked up a win in the first round of the state 4-A dual team tournament with a 5-4 win over Greensboro Grimsley at Watauga's courts Tuesday.
The Pioneers (8-5) needed two victories in doubles after the singles matches left the teams tied 3-3. Watauga's top doubles team of Landon Taylor and Harrison Battle beat Grimsley's top duo of Stephano Romano and Nils Lowhagen 8-4.
The Pioneers' No. 3 team of Noah Moomaw and Will Spinetto capped the night with a 9-7 victory over Currie Carpenter and Derek Hobson.
Taylor and Battle gave the Pioneers two singles victories. Taylor needed a third set to beat Romano at No. 1 singles 7-6, 4-6, 1-0.
Battle cruised past Carpenter at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1. Watauga's Brody O'Neal picked up Watauga's third singles victory with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nick Trye.
Grimsley grabbed singles victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. At No. 3 singles, Brian Behrhorst beat Dristen Trate 6-1, 6-3, while Jedd Ried beat Caleb Gould 1-6, 6-3, 1-0.
Lowhagen beat Watauga's Josh Lampkins at No. 6 singles 6-1, 2-6, 1-0.
Watauga faces T.C. Roberson in the second round of the playoffs on May 7.
