Watauga's JV teams sweep Wilkes Central

MORAVIAN FALLS — Watauga’s girls’ junior varsity basketball team took control of its game at Wilkes Central in the second half and beat the Eagles 45-34 Tuesday night.
The Pioneers outscored Wilkes Central 17-5 in the second quarter and took a 24-15 lead into halftime. Watauga never trailed the rest of the game by edging the Eagles 21-19 in the second half.
Watauga made 15-of-30 foul shots off 24 Wilkes Central fouls. The Eagles were not helped by the fact that out of a seven-player roster, two Eagles fouled out. Four other Eagles finished with four fouls and the other with three.
Sydney Farthing led the Pioneers with 12 points. Rachel
Foutz added eight before fouling out, while Mary Seramur scored seven.
Heaven Walker and Katie Ferguson each scored nine points for Wilkes Central. Hannah Walker added eight.
Watauga plays at Ashe County at 4 p.m. tonight.

MORAVIAN FALLS — Watauga’s junior varsity boys’ team
gradually built its lead against the Eagles Tuesday night.
The Pioneers were tied 21-21 with Wilkes Central before scoring the final four points of the first half to take a 25-21 lead into halftime. Watauga increased its lead to 41-31 in the third quarter, but Wilkes Central closed to 41-36 by scoring the final four points of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth quarter.
Watauga countered with a 11-0 run in the fourth to claim a 52-36 lead that would not be seriously challenged.
T.J. Poulos led Watauga with 15 points. Aaron Dobbins and Utah Jones each scored nine points for the Pioneers. Wilkes Central’s Trey Ferguson led all scorers with 19 points. Nick Nunn and Levi Vestal each scored eight points.
Watauga plays at Ashe County following the girls’ JV game.
