Watauga swim teams finish fifth in NWC meet

HICKORY -- Watauga's boys' and girls' swim teams each finished fifth place in the Northwestern Conference championships held at the Hickory YMCA Thursday.
Watauga's girls' finish with 193 points. St. Stephens won the girls' championship for the fourth straight year by scoring 410 points. Hickory was second with 384.5 points, South Caldwell was third with 362.5 points and Fred T. Foard was fourth with 210 points.
Watauga's boys' team finished with 250 points. South Caldwell won with 362 points, followed by Freedom with 314.50. St. Stephens was third with 292 points and Hickory was fourth with 253.
Anne Taylor captured a conference championship by winning the 50-meter dash. She won the event with a time of 26.25 seconds. Taylor was also third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.20.
Julianna Silver added a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.94. Silver also was fifth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:55.85.
Watauga's 200-meter medley relay team comprised of Taylor, Julianna Silver, Maddy Allain and Dakota Wilson finished fourth with a time of 2:05.94.
Allain, Silver, Wilson and Taylor also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.24.
St. Stephens' Sophia Cherkez won two events, while Maria Turcanu and Marinella Procopoo each won events to lead the Indians.
In the boys' meet, Reed Conner the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.52. Conner also finished fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:42.65.
Nick Woody added a third place finish in the 100 butterfly with a 1:04.82. He was also fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.14.
Joel Brown finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.93 and third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.27 seconds
Ben Watson finished fourth also seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:19.64. Watson, Conner, Brown and Woody were fourth in the 200 medley relay with a 1:58.72 and second in the 400 relay with a 3:43.61.
