Watauga junior varsity blanks Hibriten

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga’s junior varsity football team scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and beat Hibriten 20-0 at Jack Groce Stadium Thursday night.

The Pioneers recovered from their 48-19 loss to South Caldwell a week earlier by not allowing Hibriten to move the ball past the 38-yard line in the second half.

Watauga took a 6-0 lead when quarterback Austin Northern scored a 1-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left in the first half to put the Pioneers up 6-0 at halftime. Neither team could score in the third quarter but struck pay dirt in the fourth after Hibriten could not convert a fourth-and-eight from their 38-yard line.

The Pioneers started at their own 45-yard line and drove to the Hibriten 1. Zach Williams capped the eight-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and then added a two-point conversion to put Watauga up 14-0 with 2:04 left in the game.

Watauga got quarterback sacks by Anthony Deiters and by Williams to squash Hibriten’s final drive, which ended on the Watauga 19 yard line.

Dallas Trivette scored on the next play around the left side of Watauga’s line with 12.9 seconds left to ice the game.

Hibriten never ran another play.

Watauga closes out its season next Thursday at St. Stephens.
