Watauga goes 3-2 in Alleghany Duals

ALLEGHANY -- Watauga wrestling team was missing two wrestlers because of illness, but still managed to finish with a 3-2 record in the Alleghany Duals tournament held Saturday at Alleghany High School.

The Pioneers beat Alleghany 46-30, Grayson, Va. 66-18 and Mount Airy 39-35. Watauga came within a point of beating Bandys, but fell 42-41. The difference was when Watauga was deducted a team point for an improper equipment violation.

St. Stephens handled Watauga 59-17 in a preview of the two team's Northwestern Conference showdown in Boone on Jan. 24.

All of the Pioneers won at least two matches. Demetre Kostis improved his record to 22-0 by winning all five of his matches at 132 pounds.

Heavyweight Jeremiah Wooldridge also went 5-0 for the Pioneers on Saturday.

Zach Tomer went 4-1 at 145 pounds. Five Pioneers -- Alex Wetmore (106 pounds), Hunter Templeton (113), Gabe Irwin (160), Jackson Carr (182) and Jacob Ritz (220) all went 3-2 in the event.

Cameron Martin (126), Jake Irwin (2-3) and Elijah Presnell (195) went 2-3).

Watauga wrestles again Saturday in the Red Devil Duals at Newton-Conover High School. They'll also wrestle in the Tiger Classic at Chapel Hill High School on Dec. 27-28.

The Pioneers, after wrestling the entire month of December on the road, returns home for a trimatch with Avery and Ashe on Jan. 2.
