Watauga girls pull away from Panthers

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

LENOIR — There have been times when Watauga's girls' basketball team has struggled scoring this season. The fourth quarter of the Pioneers' 50-38 victory over Hibriten Tuesday was not one of those times.

Instead, the Pioneers outscored Hibriten 22-10 in the fourth, which broke a 28-28 tie at the end of the third quarter. After Hibriten took a 32-30 lead, Watauga went on a 12-2 run to claim a 42-32 lead and control of the game. Jenna Woods buried a 3-pointer after Danielle Welsh converted an old-fashioned three-point play one possession earlier.

Welsh, who was placed into the starting lineup against the Panthers, responded with 15 points to lead the Pioneers. She made six shots from the field, all layups, and converted 3-of-5 foul shots.

Watauga also rediscovered its outside shooting by making seven 3-point shots. Woods added another 3-point shot to her totals and finished with six points.

Savanna Wood drained four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Hannah Margolis scored seven points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Haleigh Wallace hit Watauga's other 3-pointer and finished with six points.

Margolis also dished out six assists, two steals and blocked two shots. Welsh added six rebounds and Whitney Dunnigan, who returned after missing two games because of a head injury, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.

Watauga finished with a season sweep of the Panthers. The Pioneers claimed a 46-40 victory at Lentz-Eggers Gym earlier in the season.

Hibriten got 19 points from Keisha Corneping and eight from Courtney Morton, whose two 3-point baskets in the second quarter fueled an 11-2 run and a 20-12 Panthers lead. Watauga, using three Welsh layups and a Woods 3-pointer, closed out the first half with a 9-0 run and a 21-20 halftime lead.

Watauga hosts Wilkes Central tonight and NWC foe St. Stephens on Friday.
