Watauga girls don't make playoff field
by Steve Behr Sports Editor
Watauga's girls' basketball team did not make the state 4-A playoff field this season.
The Pioneers, who finished 7-16 this season, was left out of the West Sectional field.
The Northwestern Conference placed two teams in the sectional. Alexander Central (17-6) is a No. 3 seed and hosts No. 14-seeded West Charlotte (11-9) Monday.
South Caldwell (14-9), still smarting from a two-point loss to Hickory in the NWC tournament final, is a No. 9 seed and plays at No. 8 seeded W.A. Hough, which is 15-8.
Charlotte Myers Park (24-0) is the No. 1 seed and hosts No. 16 Charlotte Independence (7-17). Should South Caldwell win, the Spartans would likely play at Myers Park baring an upset.
If Alexander Central wins, it would play the winner of No. 11 seeded Charlotte Mallard Creek (19-4) and No. 6 T.C. Roberson (20-3).
Hickory is the top seed in the 3-A West Sectional. The Tornadoes (23-1) host No. 16 Belmont South Point. No. 9 seeded Fred T. Foard (13-10) plays at No. 8-seeded Freedom (16-7).
Hibriten (5-17) snuck into the sectional as a 15th seed. The Panthers play at No. 2 R-S Central (21-1).
Avery's girls' basketball team reached the 1-A section as a No. 2 seed. The Vikings (17-7) host No. 15 Rosman (14-10). Ashe County did not reach the 2-A sectional.
