NEWTON — Watauga’s boys’ soccer team knocked Fred T. Foard from the unbeaten ranks with a 2-0 victory over the host Tigers in Watauga’s first Northwestern Conference game Monday night.
Foard (9-1-0, 0-1-0 NWC) went into the game ranked eighth in the state 4-A rankings. The Tigers outscored their previous three opponents 9-3 and had given up just four goals in their first nine games.
It took Watauga (7-1-1, 1-0-0) a half before finally breaking past Foard’s defense. The Pioneers got a Logan Raichle goal off a penalty kick 19 minutes into the second half. Raichle was fouled inside the 18-yard box, which set up his goal. His penalty shot landed in the upper right side of the goal.
It took the Pioneers just two minutes later to strike again. Raichle found Alex Parsons with a crossing pass, who hit a hard shot to the left side that beat the Foard keeper and gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
It was up to the Watauga defense to preserve the lead. Foard took some shots at the Watauga goal, one that was stopped by a diving Pioneers keeper Jake Chasteen.
Foard also picked up three yellow cards in the final 10 minutes.
Watauga takes on Hickory, which is ranked fourth in the 3-A rankings, Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium. The Red Tornadoes are 9-0-0 overall, which includes a 2-1 victory over a solid A.C. Reynolds team.
