Watauga Storm takes third in tournament

The Watauga Storm sixth-grade boys' basketball team finished third this past weekend in the West Wilkes Whirlies Foothills Fall Classic.
The Storm played against a field of eight teams including two of the better sixth-grade travel teams in the state. The Storm finished 2-1 in the tournament.
In their its game, the Storm beat the Catawba Valley Thunder 54-38 behind a stifling man-to-, man full-court trapping defense. The pressure was able to create multiple turnovers and allowed the Storm to build a double-digit lead by halftime.
The Storm was able to cruise to victory in the second half.
Jaiden Bond led the Storm in scoring with 17 points. Also scoring in double figures was Anderson Castle with 13 points and Andrew Freeman with 10 points.
In the second game of the tournament, the Storm beat the Lenoir Topcats 46-29. The Storm built a 27-8 lead late in the first half.
Full-court defensive pressure was critical to the Storm in its win. Watauga was lead in scoring by Castle with 15 points. Jackson Miller chipped in eight points.
The Storm was 2-0 in pool play and advanced to play the Pilot Press, one of the better sixth-grade programs in the state, for the right to advance to the Tournament Championship.
Watauga took an early lead and trailed 28-15 at halftime, but Pilot Press cruised to a 56-25 victory. The Storm was led in scoring by Bond and Jordan Gainey who each had eight points.
Other key contributors to the Storm throughout the weekend were Jake Sears (six points in the tournament), Daylon Banks (two points in the tournament), Austin Idol, Mitchell Greene, Bryce Satterfield (six points in the tournament), Jake Watson, and Alex Darner (five points in the tournament).
