Watauga JVs sweep Ashe County

WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga’s girls’ junior varsity team pulled away from Ashe County in the second half and claimed a 39-28 victory Wednesday night at Ashe County’s gym.


The Pioneers outscored Ashe 25-11 in the second half, including 12-4 in the third quarter. Ashe did not score in the final 2:42 of the fourth quarter after the Huskies closed Watauga’s lead to 33-28. The Pioneers closed out the game with a 6-0 run.


Watauga’s Madi Brown scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. Three players — Mary Seramur, Rachel Foutz and Brooklin Carroll — each scored five points.


Ashe County’s Tyler Eller scored 17 points for the Huskies. Aspen Cooper added five points.

Watauga plays at Northwestern Conference rival Alexander Central Friday.

WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga’ boys’ junior varsity basketball team pulled away from Ashe late in the fourth quarter and claimed a 58-51 victory Wednesday at Ashe’s gym.


Watauga held a 51-48 lead in the fourth quarter before closing out the game with a 7-3 run. T.J. Poulos, who led the Pioneers with 14 points, hit the final of his 3-pointers with 1:31 in the game to give Watauga a 57-48.


Poulos hit three 3-pointers against the Huskies. The sophomore point guard also dished out 10 assists, grabbed eight steals and pulled down eight rebounds.


Freshman center Aaron Dobbins also scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Dobbins also passed out three assists.


Utah Jones added 11 points and seven rebounds. Michael Ebaugh pulled down eight rebounds for the Pioneers.


Alex Spencer scored 14 points for Ashe. Bradley Lucas added 13 points and Conner Bowers scored eight points.
