Walk-off home run lifts Georgia Southern to softball title
by Staff Reports
GREENSBORO --Georgia Southern beat the UNC Greensboro 1-0 in the Southern Conference softball tournament championship Saturday thanks to a walk-off home run by Kourtny Thomas in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Georgia Southern pitcher Sarah Purvis, the league's Pitcher of the Year, tossed a complete-game shutout, but had little to show for it. She scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three over her 11 innings on the mound.
But it took Thomas' home run, hit with two outs over the left-field wall, to secure the victory. It was her only hit of the game.
Thomas got her hit off UNCG Raeanne Hanks, who went the distance on the mound for the Spartans. She allowed one run on five hits, while walking two and striking out three.
Hanks was still named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Shelby Morrill led Georgia Southern at the plate by going 2-for-4.
