WHS swim teams win three of four meets

MORGANTON -- Watauga's girls' swim team swept Freedom and Patton during their meet Wednesday.

Watauga beat Freedom 124-79 and Patton 135-66. The scores are calculated according to results of a dual meet.

Watauga's Anne Taylor continued to find success in meets involving Northwestern Conference teams. Taylor won the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:10.31 and the 100-butterfly with a time of 1:05.87.

Taylor was also part of the Pioneers' winning 200-medley relay team, which also included Kimberly Vines, Julianna Silver and Dakota Wilson. The team posted a time of 2:09.09.

Wilson won the 50-freestyle race with a time of 28.51 seconds. She was also second in the 100-freestyle with a time of 1:07.89.

Vines won the 100-backstroke with a time of 1:10.60 and posted a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:47.14. Silver won the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:19.54 and the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:56.54.

Watauga's 400-relay team of Cheyenne Hayler, Vines, Silver and Taylor won with a time of 4:23.01.

"Julianna Silver and Anne Taylor lead the way winning both of their individual events and teaming to win two relays," Pioneers coach David Gragg said. "They are both swimming on the local club team as well and competed in a tough meet this past weekend."

Lucy Edy was second in the backstroke with a time of 1:31.31. Hayler was third in the 200-freestyle and sixth in the 100-freestyle. Sydney Wiswell was fourth in the 500-freestyle and Kursten Stang was fourth in the backstroke.

Caty Neeley was third in the 100-breaststroke. Watauga's 200-relay team of Wilson, Hayler, Michala McCune and Brittany Burwell was third with a time of 2:08.03.

"Lucy Edy and Brittany Burwell has strong swims all evening," Gragg said. "Hopefully they can use this meet as a springboard to a good few weeks before the conference meet."

 

Boys' team

Watauga's boys' team beat Patton 123-60,  but fell to Freedom 121-85.

Watauga's Nick Woody won the 100-freestyle with a time of 55.50 seconds, and finished second in the 100-backstroke with a 1:03.92.

Reed Connor won the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:40.23, and the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:10.21.

Ben Watson won the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:10.76 and took fourth in the 200 -individual medley with a 2:37.54. Both teams were personal bests for Watson.

Joel Brown was second in the 50-freestyle with a 25.13 and third in the 100-butterfly with a 1:11.09.

Watauga's 200-medley relay team of Woody, Connor, Brown and Watson took second with a 1:57.17. The Pioneers' 400-freestyle relay comprised of the same swimmers won with a time of 3:44.63.

"They boys are still swimming events to see where we will best compete in a few weeks," Gragg said. "The lineup is continuously changing to see what works best.
