WHS junior varsity teams sweep Ashe

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team pulled away from Ashe in the second half and claimed a 32-20 victory at Lentz-Eggers Gym Friday.

The Pioneers (3-2) avenged a loss to the Huskies in the finals of the Ashe Junior Varsity Invitational six days earlier. The Pioneers struggled to score points in that 24-18 loss, but they changed that in a third quarter where they score 18 points overall.

The Pioneers (3-2) broke a 13-13 tie at the start of the third quarter by scoring seven of the final eight points of the period to take a 20-14. Watauga added to its lead by scoring the next eight points, giving the Pioneers a 15-1 run that was capped by a three-point play by Ryan Loflin with 4:43 left.

Loflin gave Watauga a 28-14 lead Ashe could not threaten.

Watauga center Brooklin Carroll led all scorers with 10 points. Mary Seramur scored seven points, while Madi Brown had five points and Loflin scored four.

Tyler Eller scored eight points for Ashe. Laura Hodgson added seven points.

Watauga plays at McDowell on Tuesday.
