WHS junior varsity footbal team wins again

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga’s junior varsity football team stayed undefeated with its 30-6 pasting of Fred T. Foard Thursday at Jack Groce Stadium.

The Pioneers scored on their final drive of the first half to take a 23-6 halftime lead, and added another touchdown on their second drive of the second half. Travis Ford scored touchdown runs of 1 and 25 yards in the first half.

Ford’s first touchdown capped a 69-yard, 13-play drive. Ford reached the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line after quarterback Aaron Dobbins’’ third-down pass to Justin Greer was ruled incomplete. Greer made a diving catch, but could not get his feet out of bounds.

Foard’s touchdown gave the Pioneers an 8-0 lead. Foard struck back with a 58-yard touchdown drive, but Watauga Dakota McCreary blocked the extra point attempt.

Ford scored his second touchdown in the second quarter when he raced 25 yards for a score. He set up his touchdown with a 13-yard run, which was preceded by an 18-yard Dobbins-to-Greer completion.

The Pioneers closed out the first half with a 25-yard Dobbins touchdown pass to Anthony Deiters with just 20.7 seconds left in the half.

Watauga used some trickery in the third quarter when Michael Ebaugh scored on a 16-yard double reverse that converted a third-and-14. The Pioneers drove 38 yards in nine plays to score the touchdown and take a 30-6 lead with 2:25 left in the third quarter.

Watauga plays at Hickory next week.
