WHS hires new girls' tennis coach

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga looked to Ohio to find a new girls’ tennis coach.

Anna DeChellis was named the new coach to replace Christine Canard, who left the program after last season to attend graduate school. DeChellis, who is from the Canton-Akron area, graduated from Ohio State.

Scott Taylor, the boys’ coach, was running the team while the search for a coach was underway. The team was supposed to play Mount Tabor on Monday and Reagan on Wednesday, but both matches were cancelled.

The Pioneers’ first Northwestern Conference match is Sept. 13 at Alexander Central.

“We’re excited to have her as tennis coach,” athletic director Tom Wright said. “She seems to have a great understanding of what it takes to handle the different personalities on a team.”
