WHS girls' tennis team beats Hickory 7-2

Watauga's girls' tennis team swept the doubles competition to pull away from visiting Hickory 7-2 Monday at Watauga's courts.
Watauga needed to win at least one doubles match after taking a 4-2 lead after the singles matches. The Pioneers responded with victories in all three doubles showdowns with the Red Tornadoes to ice the win.
Meredith Smith teamed with Nicole Fox at No. 1 doubles to beat Madeline Finely and Julia Kessel 8-3. Meghan Smith and Kelsi Kanoy cruised to a 10-3 victory over Jessie Herfurth and Rachel Kessel at No. 2 doubles, while Watauga's No. 3 team of Liz Clark and Annika Davidson beat Camille Hanson and Katie Mortenson 8-5.
Meredith Smith had similar success at No. 1 singles when she beat Finely 6-2, 7-6. Meghan Smith beat Herfuth 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Fox beat Julia Kessel 6-4, 2-6 (10-6 tiebreaker) at No. 3 singles.
Davidson added a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mortenson at No. 6 singles.
