WHS girls' tennis players travel to Charlotte

Watauga's girls' tennis team won a Northwestern Conference championship and its first match in the state 4-A playoffs. Now it's time for some individuals from that team to test their abilities in the postseason.
Watauga has three players headed to Charlotte to play in the state 4-A Western Regional tournament Saturday. No. 1 seeded Meredith Smith, and the doubles team of Meghan Smith and Kelsi Kanoy will play in the tournament.
Smith has been the No. 1 seeded player for the Pioneers the past two seasons.
The Pioneers, which went 10-3 during the regular season, got ready for the individuals my beating T.C. Roberson 5-4 in the first round of the state duel regional tournament on Oct. 15. It was the second time the Pioneers beat the Rams this season. Watauga beat them on Aug. 28.
The Pioneers (11-3) take on Ardrey Kell in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday. Ardrey Kell is 12-0 this season.
Smith, Kanoy and Liz Clark all won their singles matches against T.C. Roberson. Smith rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kat Wiuckerwender 6-1, 6-3, while Kanoy, playing No. 4 singles, took Maddie Bruce 6-3, 6-2. Clark, Watauga's No. 5 singles player, beat Ellie Fisher 6-4, 6-2.
The Pioneers added two doubles victories to clinch the victory. Smith teamed with Nicole Fox and No. 1 doubles to beat Wiukerwender and Audrey Chor 10-4.
Meghan Smith, who played No. 2 singles against Roberson, teamed with Kanoy at No. 2 doubles to beat Nicole Broffle and Sarah Black 10-8.
