WHS girls' JVs beat Hampton

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga’s girls’ junior varsity basketball team took an early lead and claimed a 34-27 victory over Hampton (Tenn.) in the first round of the Ashe Junior Varsity Invitational on Friday.

The Pioneers (2-0) made it two straight victories by getting 14 points from Ryan Loflin, who took control of a close fourth quarter by scoring six of the Pioneers’ 10 points. Loflin scored her sixth point of the quarter by going the length of the court for a layup that put the Pioneers in front 30-20.

“We got off to a good start,” Watauga coach Chris Calloway said. “We had three keys coming out of the locker room. Of course, to be the more focused team, and to be the more aggressive team and play as hard as you can. If you can do that, you’ll get off to a good start.”

Watauga went into the fourth leading 24-18, but Hampton’s Kendra Lewis scored a basket, which brought the Bulldogs to within 24-20. That’s when Loflin took over.

She scored her first basket off a pass from Rachel Foutz. Loflin made it 28-20 with a made shot off a drive to the basket, and then followed with her third basket of the period to put Watauga in front by 10.

“(Loflin) has been through it before last year as a freshman,” Calloway said. “I expect her to do that, actually.”

Sydney Farthing added two more baskets in the quarter to keep the Pioneers comfortable.

Watauga took an early 8-2 lead when Loflin and post player Brooklyn Carroll each scored four points. Hampton closed to 8-6, but the Bulldogs never led in the game.

Foutz finished with five points, while Carroll, Farthing and Madi Brown each scored four. Lakin Street scored 12 points for Hampton.

Watauga plays in the finals at 5:15 Saturday.
