WHS cross country teams win meet

Watauga’s cross country teams won the boys’ and girls’ 5K meet held Wednesday at State Farm Park.
The boys’ team won with 29 points, two better than South Caldwell’s 31. Crossnore Academy finished third in the three-team meet with 82 meet.
Josh Anderson finished third for the Pioneers with a time of 20:47. Teammate Michael Holland was third, followed by Will Vandenberg, Peter Vandenberg, Bryan Brackey, Dew Boyette and Carson Nguyen.
South Caldwell’s Dylan Matthewson won the race with a time of 19:39. He was the only runner to finish under 20 minutes.
Matthewson’s teammate Will Rice was second with a time of 20:39.
Watauga’s girls’ team finished with 15 points. No other team had enough runners to have a team qualify for the team standings.
Watauga runners finished in the top 18 places in the individual standings. Darby Middlebrook won the event with a 19:39. She was the only runner to finish under 20 minutes.
Madison Harman was second and Kathleen Mansure was third. Lynde Wangler was fourth and Doria Kosmala fifth.
South Caldwell’s Patterson Weaver finished 18th.
