HENDERSONVILLE -Watauga's girls' team had two runners finish in the top five, and three runners in the top 11 at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival held Saturday at Jackson Park.
Hannah Barbour finished fourth with a time of 19:25.39, and teammate Darby Middlebrook was fifth with a 19:29.78 in the event that featured 120 runners and 16 teams. Madison Harmon finished 11th with a time of 19:57.14.
Pioneers coach Randy McDonough said Middlebrook was in the middle of the pack around 80th place before she started to pick up the pace.
"From there, she worked to pass people and she caught up to the front," McDonough said.
The Pioneers were fourth overall with 84 points, which put them in striking distance of event winner Chapel Hill, which had three runners in the top 10 and finished with 62 total points. Charlotte Latin (68 points) was second and Asheville Roberson (75 points) was third.
Hailey Middlebrook was 32nd overall with a 21:05.10, and Julia Roberts was 40th with a 21:46.80 and Molly Ruble was 53rd with a 22:16.23. Ingrid Forsyth was 61st with a 22:59.70.
Watauga's boys' cross country team finished sixth overall. Daniel Osborne finished 16th in the 5K event overall by turning in a time of 16:43.58. Teammate Andrew Vandenberg was close behind, fishing 20th with a time of 17:08.30.
Watauga's next highest finisher was Bryan Brackney, who was 55th with a time of 18:16.74. Robert Seagle was 59th, Clark Brackney was 61st and Josh Anderson was 82nd. Noah Allain finished 91st, assuring that all of Watauga's runners finished in the top 100 out of a field that featured 138 runners.
"The boys and the girls both did very well," McDonough said. "The boys went out a little too conservatively and paid for it a bit. The girls went out well."
The Pioneers finished with 206 points. Chapel Hill cruised to the boys' championship with 29 points after placing four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15. Morristown West (Tenn.) was second in the team standings and Asheville Roberson was third.
Thomas Graham of Cary Academy was the overall winner with a time of 15:28.07, well in front of second place Tim Gruber of Cannon School, who had a 16:06.24.
