WHS boys tennis surprises Providence

CHARLOTTE - Watauga picked up two critical doubles victories and beat traditional 4-A power Providence 5-4 in boys' tennis Wednesday.
Michael Smith teamed with Nathan Geldmeier to beat Andrew Fishkin and Scott Alan Cottrill 11-10 at No. 2 doubles, while Harrison Battle teamed with Davis Roberts to beat John Kruszka and Jared Stier 11-9 at No. 3 doubles to seal the victory for the Pioneers (5-1).
"The doubles matches were amazing," Pioneers coach Scott Taylor said. "All three were very close. Congrats to Davis and Harrison for winning their match, which made the score 4-4. Then Mike and Nathan won in a thriller in a seven-point tie breaker. I'm really proud of the guys for the fight they put up against a very good Providence team."
Watauga's Steve Lake needed three sets to beat Conner Boehm 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 at No. 1 singles. Smith beat Kruszka 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Roberts beat Cottrill 6-4, 6-2 in No. 5 singles.
Fishkin beat Nathan Geldmeier 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Will Goldbert beat Brian Geldmeier 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Battle lost to Nicholas Cottrill at No. 6 singles 6-4, 7-5, leaving the teams tied 3-3 after the singles matches.
