WHS boys outlast Wilkes Central

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga’s boys’ basketball team pulled away in the third quarter and claimed a 55-47 victory over Wilkes Central at Lentz-Eggers Gym Tuesday.

Watauga held a 24-22 halftime lead after closing out the first half with a 7-3 run. The Pioneers opened the third quarter with an 11-1 run to take a 35-23 lead with 3:57 left in the quarter.

The Pioneers seemed to be in control of the game, but Wilkes Central closed out the third quarter with a 9-2 run and trailed 37-32 going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles added five straight points at the start of the fourth to tie the game 37-37.

Watauga did not allow them to take the lead. The Pioneers countered with a key 3-point shot by Jay Harrill to slow Wilkes Central’s momentum down. The Pioneers scored eight of the game’s next 10 points to grab a 48-41 lead with around two minutes left in the game.

Watauga made just enough foul shots down the stretch to keep Wilkes Central from catching up. The Pioneers made 5-of-10 foul shots in the final 1:09 of the game before DeWayne Mackey made his final two with 11.6 seconds left.

Watauga used a balanced offense to beat the Eagles. Cam Baker led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points, while Mackey added nine. All the Pioneers who played scored at least one point.

Will Cornett led the Eagles with 10 points. Calvin Shoemaker added nine.
