WHS boys' jayvees stay unbeaten

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

SAWMILLS — It took Watauga's boys' jayvee team longer than usual to pull away from an opponent, but the visiting Pioneers used a big fourth-quarter to finally put South  Caldwell away 60-40 Friday night.

It was enough to keep the Pioneers a perfect 20-0 overall, 10-0 in the Northwestern Conference. Yet, it was tougher to beat the Spartans this time than it was during the first meeting, which was a 49-20 victory that was 31-12 at halftime in Lentz-Eggers Gym.

The points did not come so quickly to the Pioneers, particularly in the first quarter when they led 14-9. South Caldwell closed to 26-21 before Watauga pulled away with an 8-0 run and a 34-21 halftime lead.

It was 42-32 at the end of three quarters before the Pioneers turn on their afterburners. Watauga opened with a 13-2 run, capped by a Trevor Eggers 3-pointer and two free throws from Jake Chasteen, to take a 55-34 lead the Spartans would not approach.

Cameron Baker led Watauga with 14 points, while Chasteen scored 12. Jay Harrill scored 10 points and Eggers finished with nine. Baker and Eggers made the only two 3-point baskets for the Pioneers.

South Caldwell got nine points from Trevor Soles and seven from Drew Cox.

Watauga returns to the court at Hibriten on Feb. 7.
