WHS boys beat Avery for a second time

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

NEWLAND — Once Watauga’s boys’ basketball team took a lead over Avery, the Pioneers were not willing to give it back.

Watauga took a first-quarter lead and never gave it back in a 55-48 victory over the Vikings Friday night. The visiting Pioneers shook off a loss to McDowell earlier in the week by taking a 16-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and never trailed again.

Watauga completed a season sweep of the Vikings.

Watauga used a balanced offense to beat the Vikings. Cam Baker led all scorers with 15 points, while Jay Harrill scored 13. Harrill jump-started the Watauga offense with two steals and a 3-point basket late in the first quarter.

Harrill finished with three 3-point baskets and 13 points. Point guard DeWayne Mackey added 11 points and Tyler Sturgill had seven points, all on foul shots.

James Stewart and Shea Buchanan each scored eight points for Avery.

Watauga took a 25-16 lead after a Harrill 3-pointer, but scored on two of its final nine possessions, but still led 29-22 at halftime Avery scored just two baskets from the field and two foul shots during that stretch.

Watauga hosts McDowell in a rematch on Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
