WHS JVs sweep Avery
by Steve Behr Sports Editor
NEWLAND -- It's been a long time since Watauga's junior varsity boys' basketball team lost two games in a row.
It took the visiting Pioneers two overtimes against Avery to
make sure it didn't happen again. The Pioneers got a steal and a basket from
Aaron Dobbins with three seconds left in the second overtime and took a 50-49
victory Friday night.
It was the second basket Dobbins made in the second overtime period. He intercepted a pass and was able to beat the Avery defense to the Watauga basket. Avery's Tyler Pittman's shot after Dobbins' basket did not fall as time elapsed.
Watauga lost to McDowell on Tuesday, which broke a 30-game
winning streak. The Pioneers were never comfortably ahead, but took a 34-26
lead into the fourth quarter.
But Watauga scored just three points, a 3-point basket by Utah Jones that gave Watauga a 40-34 lead. Avery scored the final six points of the quarter to force the first overtime.
Dobbins scored the first basket in the first overtime, but Avery came back by taking a 44-43 lead. T.J. Poulos forced the second overtime by making one of two foul shots with 9.7 seconds left.
Jones led a balanced Watauga offense with 11 points. Poulos
added nine points and Dobbins scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Levi Wilcox also scored seven points for the Pioneers.
Poulos added nine rebounds, while Jones and Michael Ebaugh grabbed six rebounds. Caleb Bryson had three steals.
Jacob Waldrop scored 15 points and Christian Hampton scored 10 for Avery.
