WHS JV teams sweep Fred T. Foard
by Steve Behr Sports Editor
NEWTON — Watauga's girls' jayvee team is quickly becoming a bully in the Northwestern Conference — at least in the last two games.
The Pioneers blasted Fred T. Foard 48-19 after not allowing the Tigers to score more than nine points in any quarter. It was the second straight blowout victory for Watauga, which beat Hibriten 47-22 just two days earlier.
In that game, Watauga's three-quarter press created several turnovers for baskets. Watauga's defense provided more of the same against Foard. It allowed the Pioneers to take a 24-13 halftime lead.
The Pioneers used a balanced scoring attack Friday. Clare Harris led the Pioneers with 10 points, six of them in the first half. Rachel Foutz made two of the Pioneers' three 3-point baskets and finished with eight points. Brooklin Carroll also scored eight points and both Elle Sloboda and Courtney Edwards scored six points each.
Foard's Jordan Hunsucker led all scorers with 13 points. Maddi Miller scored three.
Watauga faces a tough test Tuesday when it hosts Hickory at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
WHS JV BOYS 40, FRED T. FOARD 22
NEWTON — Watauga's offense usually starts somewhat slowly, but builds enough momentum in the second quarter to bury opponents by halftime.
The Pioneers started slowly against Foard, but never really found their rhythm against the Tigers. Watauga used defense, especially in the third quarter, to beat Foard 40-22.
Watauga (17-0, 7-0 NWC) led 12-10 at halftime after scoring just four points in the second quarter. The Pioneers outscored Foard 10-2 in the third quarter and 24-12 in the second half to stay undefeated.
Cameron Baker scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pioneers. Jake Chasteen added 14 points and also pulled down nine boards.
Matt Lambert scored just two points, but also dished out four assists and blocked three shots.
Watauga hosts Hickory Tuesday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
