Watauga's girls' junior varsity team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in its 34-26 victory over St. Stephens in the Pioneers' a Northwestern Conference game Friday afternoon.
The game used a running clock for the first four minutes of each six-minute quarters because of anticipated bad weather expected Friday night. Watauga (11-11, 8-4 NWC) closed out the season by winning eight of its final 10 games.
The Pioneers made five 3-point baskets, including two from Clare Harris, who finished with a game-high 10 points. Rachel Foutz also made two 3-point baskets and finished with eight points. Brooklin Carroll added a fifth 3-point basket and finished with three points.
Olivia Owens and Jade Blaylock each finished with eight points.
Watauga took away more of the doubt of the outcome of the game by outscoring St. Stephens 13-2. The Pioneers cruised to a 25-9 halftime lead and never looked back, though St. Stephens outscored the Pioneers 12-4 in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers could have won by a bigger margin, but made just 1-of-11 from the foul line. St. Stephens made 10-of-16 from the stripe.
Watauga, with nine freshmen on the roster, finished in third place behind Hickory and Alexander Central in the NWC standings. Watauga beat Hickory in one game.
