WHS JV boys stay undefeated

TAYLORSVILLE — Watauga's boys' jayvee team extended its unbeaten streak to 19 games with a 56-30 victory over host Alexander Central Tuesday night in Alexander Central's jayvee gym.

Watauga (19-0, 9-0) got off to a slow start against the Cougars, who took a 7-2 lead. Watauga did not score from the field until a Jay Harrill stickback with 4:35 left in the first period.

The Pioneers, after taking an 11-9 lead by the end of the first period, stormed Alexander Central in the second quarter. Watauga scored the first 11 points of the quarter to take a 22-9 lead. After the Cougars closed to 24-15, Watauga scored the final five points to claim a 29-15 lead by halftime.

Watauga led 39-19 midway through the third quarter before burying the Cougars for good. The Pioneers, who outscored Alexander Central 24-8 in the third quarter, closed the third period with a 14-0 run and took a 53-21 lead by the end of the quarter.

Jake Chasteen led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed five steals. Matt Lambert added 11 points and Harrill scored eight. Jonathan Plyler scored eight.

Watauga's point guard T.J. Poulos dished out five assists and Eli Gailes had four.

Alexander Central got seven points from Travis Leeland.

Watauga tries to make it 20 straight victories Friday at South Caldwell.

 

ALEXANDER CENTRAL JV GIRLS 52, WATAUGA 23

TAYLORSVILLE — Watauga's offense struggled in its loss to Alexander Central Tuesday in the Cougars' jayvee gym. The Pioneers did not score more than nine points in any quarter, and was outscored 18-3 in a third quarter that saw them fall behind 45-14.

Clare Harris led Watauga in scoring with eight points. Elle Sloboda scored five and both Rachel Foutz and Brooklin Carroll scored three.
