Using their Head

by Staff Reports

DAVIDSON -- Appalachian State's William Head went 2-for-4 with two RBI, scored two runs and stole two bases in the visiting Mountaineers' 4-1 victory over Davidson Friday night.

Appalachian State (6-1, 1-0 SoCon) claimed its 11th-straight victory over the Wildcats in the historical series, while Davidson (4-2, 0-1) suffered its second-straight loss.

Appalachian State's Jamie Nunn picked up his third victory on the mound this season. Nunn struck out eight and walked three in seven innings, while giving up five hits and just one run.

Taylor Thuber pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and closer Rob Marcello struck out two Wildcats in the ninth inning to preserve the victory. Marcello, who earned his fourth save of the season, gave up two hits, the first hits he's allowed all season, but no runs.

Head improved his batting average to .462 after going 2-for-4 from the plate Friday. He gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead when he drove in a run on a hit-and-run with Hector Crespo, who reached base on a Davidson throwing error. Head delivered his second RBI in the fifth inning with a single that drove in Dillon Dobson

Head scored on an Alex Leach double, which gave the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead. Leach, a sophomore first baseman, has been swinging a hot bat lately. The Ardrey Kell graduate drove in his 13th run in seven games this season when he drove in Head.

Leach went 2-for-4 from the plate Friday.

Davidson got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI triple by Forrest Brand. Appalachian State got the run back when Head, who reached base on an error, scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams finished with eight hits overall. The teams were scheduled to play Saturday, but results were not available by presstime. They'll also play Sunday at 2 p.m.
