Update: Watauga finishes third at Twins Cities

WINSTON-SALEM - Watauga's girls' tennis team finished third in the Twin Cities Tennis Invitational held Friday and Saturday.

The Pioneers lost to Raleigh Broughton 9-0 on Saturday in the semifinals, but rallied to beat Wilmington New Hanover 6-3 in the third-place match.

Watauga won its top four-seeded singles matches to put away New Hanover. Playing 10-point pro-sets, No. 1 seeded Shannon Herndon beat Campbell Cooper 10-0, and Hannah Peterson (No. 2 seed) beat Thornton Cornette 10-2. Meredith Smith (No. 3) beat Miraih Warren 10-4 and Katelin Fox (No. 4) beat Kate Leader 10-7.

Herndon teamed with Smith to win 10-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Patterson teamed with Fox to win 10-8 at No. 2 doubles.

It was a different story against powerful Raleigh Broughton. Herndon narrowly lost 10-8 to Hamilton Lovett, who went on to win her championship match 10-1 over Salisbury's Joy Loeblein. Broughton won two other singles matches over Watauga by 10-1 scores and three by 10-0 scores.

Broughton won the team event with a 9-0 win over Salisbury.

Friday's match

WINSTON-SALEM - Watauga won its first match of Friday by beating Cardinal Gibbons of Raleigh 6-3.

The Pioneers won four of the six singles matches, all played in a pro-set style. Herndon won her match 10-2 over Rachel Lynch-Daniels at No. 1 singles, while Peterson beat Cori Krasue 10-3 in No. 2 singles.

Smith beat Panosian 10-3 in No. 3 singles, and Fox beat Christian Wangen at No. 4.

Lexi Evans fell 10-8 to Andie Fitzgerald at No. 5 and Margaret Anagnos lost to Taylor Bodemann at No. 6.

Herndon teamed with Smith to win 10-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Peterson and Fox won their doubles match 10-2. The Pioneers improved to 2-0 overall, while Cardinal Gibbons slipped to 2-3.

Watauga is scheduled to host Northwestern Conference rival Fred T. Foard on Tuesday.
