Update: ASU splits doubleheader with Butler

Appalachian State won the first game of a doubleheader with Butler 6-2 at Smith Stadium, but lost the second game 12-7

The Mountaineers got a three-run home run from Alex Leach to cap a four-run sixth inning in the first game. The blast gave the Mountaineers a 5-2 lead. Appalachian State, which finished with five hits, added another run in the seventh.

Hector Crespo had two hits for the Mountaineers, including an RBI single in the seventh. Josh Zumbrook doubled in the inning and scored on Crespo’s single.

ASU pitcher Jamie Nunn picked up his second win of the season. Nunn allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in seven innings. Taylor Thurber allowed just two hits and no runs in the two innings he pitched.

Butler won the nightcap after rapping out 17 hits. Butler scored a combined nine runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-4 lead.

Butler scored four runs in the fourth inning with help of three Appalachian State errors. All of the runs came with two outs. Jimmy Risi hit a solo home run, which was followed by two more hits and three throwing errors.

Jeffrey Springs took the loss after giving up nine runs in 3 2/3 innings. Five of the runs were earned. Overall, the Mountaineers’ defense made five errors.

The Mountaineers scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Leach, a sacrifice fly from Jaylin Davis and an RBI single by Noah Holmes.

Crespo finished with three of the Mountaineers’ 12 hits. Dillon Dobson and Leach added two hits each.

The teams play at 1 p.m. Sunday at Smith Stadium in the third game of the series.
