Tough loss to take

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

LENOIR — Some day, Hibriten’s Keisha Corpening is going to graduate. Watauga girls’ basketball coach Klay Anderson will make sure Corpening shows up to the ceremony on time.

Corpening, a senior who has given Watauga fits in the past, scored the game-winning basket with 10 seconds left and lifted Hibriten to a 41-39 victory over the visiting Pioneers Wednesday. The Northwestern Conference showdown made up from Jan. 11 when inclement weather forced the postponement of the game.

Hibriten seemed ready to walk away from the game when the Panthers went on an 8=0 run to take a 39-32 lead.

Watauga answered with a 7-0 run to tie Hibriten with 26.7 seconds left in the game. After a timeout, Corpening calmly worked the ball up the right side of the court and drove to the basket for a layup with 10 seconds left.

Watauga guard Savanna Wood’s long shot fell short, which preserved Watauga’s win. Wood finished with 11 points after making three 3-point baskets. Clare Harris led the Pioneers with 12 points after making four 3-pointers.

Watauga finished with eight baskets from beyond the 3-point stripe.

Corpening led all scorers with 21 points after making shots from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. Ally Soldati added 15 points. Watauga outscored the Panthers 15-8 in the fourth quarter.

The Pioneers overcame a slow start to take a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pioneers struggled to score in the second quarter by making just two of their 11 shots from the field. That allowed Hibriten to catch the Pioneers and tie the game 19-19 by halftime.

Hibriten opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run. The Panthers led 30-24 going into the fourth quarter.

Watauga hosts Fred T. Foard Friday weather permitting.
